Mental Health in Construction: Joint Code of Practice (JCOP)

Welcome to the Arboricultural Association and Mates in Mind partnership page

Welcome to the Arboricultural Association and Mates in Mind partnership page.

“Mental health is a critical issue in arboriculture. The Arboricultural Association has an important role in raising awareness and helping our members get access to any support they might need. Our partnership with Mates in Mind is one of the ways we're working to make a difference.” John Parker, CEO.

Need help? What is the "Be A Mate" Text Service?

As part of our comprehensive approach to tackling mental ill-health and stigma within the construction, transport, logistics, fire, security, manufacturing, energy, farming, agriculture and related industries, we offer a text support service to individuals who may be struggling.

We're proud to partner with Shout to offer a free and confidential mental health support service to anyone in distress.

To use the service, simply text “BeAMate” to 85258 and trained volunteers can help with issues including anxiety, stress, loneliness or depression and are available 24/7.

While Mates in Mind will always emphasise a preventative approach for organisations, we hope that this measure will allow people to seek much-needed support if they are at the point of crisis.

Be part of the action and join Mates in Mind as a Supporter

Training Courses

Start the Conversation

A 45-minute awareness session about mental health in the workforce.

It’s important to create general awareness and understanding of the issues facing your workers. Stigma is still one of the biggest barriers, particularly in the workplace. A good place to begin is by starting a conversation.

There are two versions of this course available:

  1. For all staff.
  2. For apprentices.

Train the Facilitator for Start the Conversation

Our Train the Facilitator course provides support to your employees for the delivery of our Start the Conversation course, following the purchase of Start the Conversation licences or a Premium Support package.

There are two versions of this course available:

  1. For all staff.
  2. For apprentices.

Managing Stress within Teams

Essential for every responsible manager, this course highlights some of the pressures their teams might face, helps managers become more aware of their own actions and behaviours, and most importantly it helps manage and reduce stress levels within their team.

Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing for Directors

This course aims to provide directors and senior managers with an understanding of how to support the health and wellbeing of people in their organisation.

Manage the Conversation – for supervisors and managers

A half-day (3 hours) training course to increase awareness of mental ill health amongst foremen, supervisors and managers.

Manage the Conversation training for line managers and supervisors provides an excellent framework for leaders increasing their understanding and awareness of mental health, how to spot the signs, support their team and how to have conversations about mental health.

Mental Health First Aid

A 2-day course for anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of mental health.

If there was an incident on site – would you know what to do? If it was first aid related, you’d get your first aider to attend to it. So why not do the same thing if it related to a mental health condition?

Mental Health First Aid Champion

One-Day Mental Health Awareness Course.

This course accredits delegates as an Adult Mental Health First Aid Champion, providing increased awareness of:

  • Common mental health issues.
  • Knowledge and confidence to advocate for mental health awareness.
  • Ability to spot signs of mental ill-health.
