World Mental Health Day provides another key point in the calendar to recognise how mental health support and awareness is still so important, and where positive actions can make such a difference. Whilst some great progress have been made, there is yet more that all of us can do to break down the stigma, remove the barriers to seeking expert help and focus on the important prevention steps before someone reaches crisis point.
The struggles of the recent pandemic have now mostly subsided, however many of us will face further incoming challenges over the next few months leading to heightened anxiety and worries linked to the cost of living and financial pressures.
Financial wellbeing is a critical part of mental health and we recognise how economic stresses can have a devastating impact on someone - which is why Mates in Mind is rolling out new financial wellbeing education resources.
Through our partnership with the national charity StepChange, which provides the UK’s most comprehensive debt advice service, helping people with debt problems take back control of their finances and their lives, we hope to offer people specialist support and reassurance through these difficult times.
Opening an honest conversation with someone about mental health and the factors that can negatively impact it, continues to be the most immediate and effective starting point. We cannot underestimate how difficult this important first step can be when starting a conversation or sharing your personal situation, but we are here to help and provide clear language alongside general awareness that will support people to recognise that everyone has mental health and it varies depending on circumstances and life stresses.
Therefore on this World Mental Health Day and indeed every day, if you believe someone may be struggling please don't be afraid to reach out and start a conversation.
