What does Mates in Mind do?
Mates in Mind is a leading UK charity that enables UK organisations, of any size, to improve their workforces’ mental health. We do this by providing the skills, clarity and confidence to employers on how to raise awareness, improve understanding and address the stigma that surrounds mental health.
Working alongside our partners, sector leaders and growing community of Supporters, our work is delivering effective change across UK workplaces. We bring insight and expertise that is improving the understanding of mental health across hundreds of workplaces. Importantly, our approach enables individuals to understand how, when and where they can get support.
Mates in Mind support organisations across the UK, focussing on the construction industry as well as working across other sectors, including transport, logistics, manufacturing and processing logistics.
Are we a training provider?
Mates in Mind is not a training provider. However, we work alongside a number of partner organisations, such as Mental Health First Aid England and the British Safety Council, who support us in delivering our training courses.
Why is mental health an important issue?
Mates in Mind believe mental health, and its improvement across UK workplaces, is an important issue to address and tackle because everyone has mental health.
In the UK 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem each year (MIND) and within the workplace 3 in 5 employees experience mental health issues because of work (Mental Health at Work 2018 Summary Report). Mental ill-health can affect anyone at any time, and we work to tackle the silence and stigma that so often surrounds the topic so that individuals have the clarity and confidence to now how and where to get support.
We understand that without an understanding and awareness of mental health, it can be difficult to start the conversation. Therefore, Mates in Mind are helping to make sense of available options and support for employers to address mental health within the workplace.
Why should a business be looking to improve mental health awareness and understanding?
Recent reports have shown, forty-four per cent of work-related ill health cases were attributed to stress, depression or anxiety. This amounted to 15.4 million working days lost in 2017/18, with mental ill-health costing UK employers an estimated £35 billion in 2017.
Business should be looking to improve mental health awareness and understanding because this can help, organisations to tackle the stigma and silence that surrounds the topic. In this way, workplace attitudes and cultures can be changed, and business can develop open and healthy workplace environments in which their workforce can thrive.
Is construction the only industry we support?
Mates in Mind support organisations across the UK, focusing on construction, as well as working across other sectors including transport, logistics manufacturing and others.
Mates in Mind was initially established to support the UK construction and related industries. However, due to increasing numbers of enquiries from other industries we now offer our support and guidance to organisations from a range of sectors.
However, whilst we are delighted to be supporting additional sectors, we remain committed to supporting construction and achieving our initial target of reaching 75% of the industry by 2025.
